Ask a Technician: Do I Need to Replace My Entire Windshield If It Gets Cracked?

Image
Q. A rock hit my windshield and made a mark but not a full-blown crack.  Can I really just do that crack repair treatment instead of replacing the whole windshield? A.  The Stevinson basic rule of thumb is that if the chip is smaller than the size of a quarter you can go with a repair job. But if it’s any bigger, a replacement might be necessary. Windshield repair is actually pretty amazing and when done properly, you can barely notice it. Windshield glass isn’t your run-of-the-mill glass. It’s not like the glass in your windows at home; it’s laminated safety glass.  Laminated glass is really just what it sounds like - two pieces of glass laminated together with a piece of plastic between them. That inner layer is what keeps the glass in one piece when it breaks. Instead of shattering into tiny, deadly shards, the plastic layer holds the broken pieces together, resulting in that spiderweb look. Repairing a ding or crack is done by injecting a clear resin into the damaged

When we get customer reviews that really stand out, we like to share them with the community because we're very proud of when our team at Stevinson Toyota West shines. This review from our customer Robert in March of this year shows how a touch of customer service and a few comforting amenities can really be a pleasant surprise, even in not-so pleasant circumstances.  "January 23, 2017, was one of my best days in a very long time. December 23, 2016 was a night that brought my previous Subaru Forester to a screeching halt after hitting a pickup truck broadside. The other driver was driving without lights or turn signals and making a left turn across my traffic lanes. When I saw him, it was too late to avoid the crash that totaled my SUV. Now, a month later, I was finally able to shop for a replacement vehicle. The previous weekend I was "shopping online" and noticed Stevinson Toyota West 's advertising. I responded by asking for a call wi

Toyota Shows Off at CES 2017 With all the advances in modern vehicles (like computers, Wi-Fi hotspots, and autonomous driving technologies), it's no wonder that they play such a prominent role at Las Vegas' annual Consumer Electronic Show (CES). Automakers often take the opportunity to show off some of their most impressively advanced concept vehicles at CES, and the one Toyota brought to the show blew us all away here at  Stevinson Toyota West .  Called the Concept-i, the concept demonstrates the Japanese automaker's willingness to reimagine the relationship between a driver and their vehicle. As Bob Carter, senior vice president of automotive operations for Toyota, says: At Toyota, we recognize that the important question isn’t whether future vehicles will be equipped with automated or connected technologies. It is the experience of the people who engage with those vehicles. Thanks to Concept-i and the power of artificial intelligence, we think the future i
